Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of access tunnels leading to the facility... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," he added. "Including them were numerous British troops deployed over the holidays. This operation, to remove militants who threaten our way of life, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces executed what it termed a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
